This gall clearly falls under Kinsey's description of Neuroterus vernus var. vernus, which he lists as forming swellings on ament stems or young leaf veins/petioles on Quercus macrocarpa. Weld lists this as a distinct species on flower stems, with only galls on petioles attributed to N vernus. The phylogeny published by Ward et al 2022 places this gall in a different clade to Neuroterus distortus and exigua, two other galls Kinsey judged to be part of Neuroterus vernus, suggesting that Weld was correct to hold the two as distinct.
