This gall is what Kinsey called Neuroterus saltatorius; he mentions that the species is found on Quercus alba but doesn't name a variety associated with that host. Weld seems to have disagreed with Kinsey's assessment and did not use the name for this gall and only mentioned his varietal name N saltatorius australis for the gall on Quercus stellata. Kinsey specifically notes that this gall is found on "white oaks except the chestnut oaks" but Weld lists his undescribed gall on several chestnut oaks.

Galls observed on Quercus montana (eg) have shown discolored spots on the leaf above the gall, similar to those often observed with N saltatorius in California. These spots are typically but not universally absent with the galls on Quercus alba.
