On Q falcata. Also on Q imbricaria, cinerea [incana]. In DC area galls start to develop from mid-Apr to early May. Young ones are red and later develop a grayish bloom and often spots. Larvae pupate in June and galls turn brown. Adults emerged June 7, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20 - nine adults from over 100 galls, being heavily parasitized.

AMPHIBOLIPS ACUMINATA, new species

Gall.--The mature specimens of this species average considerably over 2 inches long by more than an inch in diameter; they are brownish yellow, subglobular, and acuminated at apex, constructed on the same principle as most of the apple galls, having a central kernel, held in place by a spongy substance, and a very thin shell. Some specimens are much more acuminated than others and what may be termed pepper-shaped, not more than half an inch in diameter and much less than 2 inches in length. The gall is attached to the twigs.

One female specimen, reared June 24, 1879. The gall occurs in Washington on Quercus niger. The specimen from which the fly was reared was taken by Dr. L. O Howard in Maryland.

Amphibolips acuminata

Fusiform, tapering, the apex usually somewhat curved, yellowish brown twig gall, internally spongy, with a hard larval cell, length 3 to 5.5 cm, diameter 1.5 to 3 cm, on Q marilandica in May and June.

Amphibolips acuminata Ashmead

Gall. Attached to the twigs of black jack oak (Quercus marylandica) in May and June. Elongated, subglobular, sometimes pepper-shaped, with the apex drawn out into a point, which is sometimes bent. Yellowish brown, probably green when fresh, thin shelled as in Amphibolips confluens and smooth. Internally it is filled with a spongy substance, with a central, hard, larval cell. Length, 30 to 55 mm. Diameter 15 to 30 mm.
