Swollen fruit (380).... Contarinia virginianae (Felt) and Dasineura pergandei Felt

C. virginianae. Infested fruit are variously shaped and grow to twice normal size but do not develop a stone. Larvae live gregariously in a central cell and drop to the ground when full-grown. Pupation occurs the following spring. (Gagne goes on to describe how multiple other secondary feeders have been reared from these galls but are likely not inducers.) Hosts: P. virginiana, P. serotina, P. sp.; Felt's unpublished notebook lists also the introduced P. cerasus as a host. Distr.: Maine and Ontario to Manitoba and Idaho, south to Virginia and Utah.
