At anthesis, in July and August, conspicuous bud galls (Figs 1–2) can be found among the flower heads. Each gall replaces an entire flower head and consists of a series of overlapping scales. In the center or among the outer bracts of each gall live one or more yellow larvae of a gall midge (Cecidomyiidae) (Figs 3–4).
