Relationship: Leaf nodules (small cephaloneon galls on upper leaf surface); erineum (same mite?)

Notes: This mite has been in Phytoptus, Eriophyes, Phyllocoptes, Aculus and Aceria [several authors classified it based on the deutogyne instead of the protogyne]; it belongs in Eriophyes. Amrine and Stasny (1996, #2306) moved Aculus leionotus (Nalepa 1891), #1180, to Eriophyes leionotus (Nalepa 1891) based on examination of protogynes; they corrected the habit from erineum to leaf nodules (Cephaloneon betulinum). This species was described from the deutogyne, which would be placed under Aculus. Nalepa (1919, p. 33 and 1923c, p. 38) emended the name to lionotus, but the emendation has not been generally accepted. We follow Liro & Roivainen (1952) and spell it leionotus.
