A variant of this species formerly documented as "Asphondylia l-tridentata-fringed-cup-gall," which forms tiny, cup-shaped galls on the stems of Larrea tridentata with small, leafy 'fringes' flaring out from the top and a hardened cell with a resin-like texture, containing the larva inside of the 'cup', was confirmed to be induced by midges indistinguishable from A resinosa by Dr Gagne (personal communication).
