Noticeable galls may be seen on new needles starting in June (fig. 184). Galls of C. pseudotsugae are swollen on the lower surface and colored on both surfaces with yellow, pink, or purple. [photos on pg. 114]

On the dorsal surface, galls appear as smooth, yellowish, succulent swellings, while on the underside the needle tissues swell around the larva with ridges of tissue growth.
