A near-spherical, hairless, yellow-red mottled globular bud gall surrounded by numerous short, narrow, hairy bracts on Quercus alba. Similar to Andricus stropus but with shorter bracts and a smoother, less elongated capsule. Differ from Andricus quercusfrondosus in being fresh in the fall rather than the spring, in having a colored capsule rather than a white one, and in lacking broader leafy bracts. Observed in Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, fresh in August-October, sometimes persisting on the tree into the following spring. Similar galls on Quercus bicolor may or may not be the same species.
