Asphondylia ovata is a bivoltine species which produces an egg-shaped stem swelling along the main stem and upper branchlets of Bidens frondosa (Linnaeus). One larva develops per gall. Females from these galls oviposit at the base of the plant and neonate larvae overwinter at that site, where the spring crown gall is formed.
