Dasyneura communis Felt

This species was reared in early spring of 1909 from jars containing soft maple, Acer rubrum, leaves bearing thickened pouch galls along the veins. The galls are often reddish (pi. 2, fig. 6) on the upper side and have a length of one-fourth inch or more. It was also obtained from a number of jars containing various galls and debris. There is grave doubt as to this species causing the gall mentioned above. A species of Polygnotus was reared from this gall.

More than one distinct type of damage has been attributed to D communis, but the various kinds may be caused by more than one species of gall midge.

The pouches, usually situated next to a major vein, open to the upper leaf surface and may be long and narrow to short and pea-shaped.
