Cynips quercus notha, n. sp.

Still more remarkable, perhaps, than the preceding observation, is the discovery, among large numbers of the gall of C. q. palustris, of another gall, constructed on the same principle, that is, with a moveable ovule on the inside, but entirely different in the details of its organization. This gall, growing on the same trees and in exactly the same situation with that of C q. palustris, often alongside with it, is, however, much more rare. Its shell is not globular but oblong, much thinner and hence less succulent than that of C. q. palustris. Its green surface shows some longitudinal, semitransparent veins, of which there is no trace in the other gall. The ovule likewise is different; instead of round it is elongated, rounded at one end, pointed at the other, resembling a seed very much; its outer shell is much harder, smooth and shining. One of these galls had coalesced with a gall of C. q. palustris, just in the same manner as the above mentioned double galls of the latter kind. And, singular enough, the ovule of this double gall showed, by its unsymmetrical shape, that it was the compound of the ovules of the two different kinds. (I have preserved the specimen in my collection.) I obtained several specimens, male and female, from these galls, which showed no perceptible difference from C. q. palustris. What the different shape of the gall means, is a mystery to me. Until this is solved, I propose to call the gall Quercus notha, in order to distinguish it from the other. It may be that the flies themselves, upon , closer examination, would show some specific differences. Both galls excluded their flies between the 20th and the 30th of May.

Elongated, blister-like, at edge of leaf, the conical tip prolonged on upper side of leaf into a sharp point, the walls very thin, green, veiny and translucent. In May on Q rubra, velutina, and coccinea. The flies emerge early in June.

Diplolepis notha

Galls were collected at Evanston, Winnetka, Glencoe, Fort Sheridan, and Waukegan, IL. Adults issued June 7, 1909, before June 4, 1913. June 3, 1915. At Washington, D. C, flies issued on May 18 from galls on Q. palustris.

Andricus (Callirhytis) pusulatoides n. sp.

Blister-like galls on the points of the acute lobes of the leaves of Q. coccinea, each tipped with the long hair-like point that terminates each lobe. They are ovate-acuminate, and look as if a bubble of air had separated the upper and under lamina of the leaf They are about one-third by one-fifth of an inch in diameter, sometimes a little depressed vertically. The walls are very thin, the color the same as the leaf. Each contains a free, oblong-oval, thin walled larval cell, whose length is fully twice its diameter. The free larval cell of Dryophanta palustris, the only species with which this can be confounded, is perfectly round, and the gall is larger, thicker, and rarely found in the same position.

This is not a common species, though I have met with a few individuals nearly every year for many years past. They are the prey of parasites to such an extent that I have never reared more than two or three true gall-flies, and I have now but a single female fly, of whose identity I am sure, and from which the above description is made.

Gall: Singly on the points of the acute lobs of the leaves of scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea), red oak (Quercus rubra), and pin oak (Quercus palustris), in May. Monothalamous. Blister or bubble-like, oblong, thin-shelled and succulent. It is green and the surface shows some longitudinal semitransparent veins. Hollow inside, containing a free seed-like kernel in which the larva lives. This kernel is oblong oval, rounded at one end and somewhat pointed at the other.

Habitat: MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA

The flies emerge late in May and early in June.
